Celebrate National Read a Book Day using these 3 Goody Business Book Awards tips for authors and readers

To honor the positive impact of authors, bookstores, and libraries, the Goody Business Book Awards is sharing 3 new ways to celebrate National Read a Book Day on September 6th

The Goody Business Book Awards honors 100% social impact authors, who are making a positive impact with words in 50 categories. And the deadline to Nominate Your Book for this annual awards program is September 30, so please don’t miss it!

And what is National Read a Book Day?

According to National Today, “National Read a Book Day on September 6 calls all book lovers to indulge in their favorite hobby, guilt-free. Bringing new worlds to life, books enlighten us and transport us on exciting adventures. They can challenge our perspectives on the human experience in ways unmatched by other media. In a world deluged by technology, National Read a Book Day encourages us to silence the noise and turn the pages for a while.”

So what are 3 new ways readers, authors, agents, publishers and publicists can celebrate National Read a Book Day?

1. Visit and Buy a New Book at an Independent Bookstore

With Amazon dominating book sales today, it’s really important to support independent bookstores who are the true drivers of the book lover community. They are the small shops that actually host author talks and book signings that provide a meaningful exchanges between readers and writers.

We personally love Zibby’s Bookshop (Santa Monica, CA), Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore (San Diego, CA), Bart’s Books (Ojai, CA), Buxton Books (Charleston, SC), Harvard Bookstore (Cambridge, MA), Vroman’s Bookstore (Pasadena, CA), Ivy Bookshop (Baltimore, MD), and more who actively host book talks.  Zibby’s Bookshop not only hosts book talks 3+ times a week, they having writing retreats for book writers. What is your favorite independent bookstore?

So please visit a non-chain bookstore, buy a book, and thank them for staying open on National Read a Book Day.

2. Write a Book Review to Thank an Author

To celebrate authors on National Read a Book Day (and really any day), one of the best ways that you can thank them is by writing a book review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. We cannot emphasize the importance of book reviews enough. Most authors spend months, if not years, writing their life story, tips and narrative in a book to help and entertain others.

When an author gets a book review from a reader, it’s feels like Christmas morning.

And please don’t overthink writing a book review because then you may never publish it. Simple write a short paragraph that emphasizes the most important thing that you got from reading their book. Think about what stood out the most, write a few sentences about the impact on your life, and then hit submit.

3. Read a Book in a Cool New Place

To enhance your reading experience, find a new cool place to read a book on National Read a Book Day. You may want to visit an outdoor park, non-chain coffee shop like Cuppa Tahoe, tea room, independent bookstore or even go to a library.

Yes, we want to give a shout out to libraries for playing a huge role in building the book reading community. We’ve seen them host many book author talks, and these are not easy to find.

We especially want to thank the Newton Free Library (Newton, MA), Dover Public Library (Dover, Ohio), and Provincetown Public Library (Provincetown, MA) for hosting and/or will host book talks with Son/Editor Rob Schwartz about “The Wisdom of Morrie – Living and Aging Creatively and Joyously) by his late father Morrie Schwartz (who is the beloved subject of the top memoir “Tuesdays with Morrie”). The interviews and Q and A afterwards has meant the work to the authors and readers.

And if you decide that you want to listen to an Audiobook instead of reading a hard copy of a book on National Read a Book Day, try going for a hike or take a drive. There are endless options for learning from a new book when you are listening to the audio version.
