Infuse your organization with a distinct personality and culture that draws customers in a way that simply competing on price cannot.
Joe Coulombe founded what would become Trader Joe’s in the late 1960s and helped shape it into the beloved, quirky food chain it is today. Realizing early on that he could not compete and win by playing the same game his bigger competitors were playing, he decided to build a store for educated people of somewhat modest means. He brought in unusual products from around the world and promoted them in the Fearless Flyer, providing customers with background on how they were sourced and their nutritional value. He also gave the stores a tiki theme to reinforce the exotic trader ship concept with employees wearing Hawaiian shirts.

In Building the Business of You, I share future of work trends so professionals, entrepreneurs, freelancers, founders, and side hustlers can "skate to where the puck will be" and form their own career mashup.

The career mashup is my term for the career of the future (and increasingly the present) in which workers merge their skills, interests, passions, values, hobbies, opportunities, relationships, education, network, identity, and even multiple jobs and gigs. People no longer want to conform to one rigid and structured path. They want to reflect their multidimensional selves so they can realize their full potential.

And in this new, fluid and constantly changing world of work, the dream job is no longer something you get. It's something you create. In Building the Business of You, I provide professionals with a practical system and tools so they can create theirs.

As founder and CEO of The Sketch Effect, an illustration and animation company that provides businesses with creative visual communication goods and services, Warren draws upon his decades of experience in marrying the worlds of business and art. He leans on his own early struggles leaving his “real business job” at a Fortune 500 company, and lays out nine critical shifts creatives must use to build a sustainable business without sacrificing passion. This book will prove indispensable to anyone who refuses to become the “starving artist” stereotype.

Poverty and the Unequal Society in Hong Kong

Book Cover Upload
Author:

Gary Lai

How is your book helping others?

As Tom Gundy, the editor of Hong Kong Free Press, wrote: Gary Lai “addressed poverty by raising awareness of the different inequalities it has caused and proposing reforms to combat the worst forms of chronic deprivation.”

Lai’s birthplace is a dynamic city. But the contrast between the well-off and the poor is stark. Luxury brand bag-toting women can often be seen walking past beggars on the sidewalks of busy streets.

Inequality has been steadily increasing from 1976. Poverty makes people more vulnerable and corruptible. This book ascertains the extent of poverty in Hong Kong, in the context of the experiences in other parts of the world. The meditations in this book include essays that Gary has published in the popular media, thus proven to have relevance and influence. An eternal optimist, Lai believes that understanding the destitute in Hong Kong can yield something more universal.
