To help authors increase buzz and sales, Goody Business Book Awards and Goody PR Founder Liz H. Kelly uncovers new author superpowers marketing tips that starts with answering 3 questions.
Based on 20+ years of book marketing experience, Kelly says you need a book publicity strategy that regularly promotes your Author Superpowers in all of your digital content to reach your niche audience faster. For example, you want to share social media posts a few times a week, post weekly videos, send out monthly press releases via a newswire featuring how you can help others in your area of expertise, and Nominate Your Book for book awards.
And don’t just promote your author superpowers once, and think people will remember. You need a book publicity campaign that continually features content that answers these 3 questions:
1. What makes you a unique author?
Before you even start writing your book, you should dig deep inside and identify what makes your personal story unique? Are you a top specialist in any area where people ask for your advice? Do you have a backstory that only you have that stands out?
For example, when we first attended Mega Book Marketing conferences hosted by 100 million book sales authors Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield, co-authors of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series, the most successful authors in the room had a powerful moving story. Some had started successful companies, and now help entrepreneurs. Other authors had overcome major health issues, and use that experience to provide insights to help readers.
So how is your story and background different from everyone else in your area of expertise? And do you share this backstory in your book to emotionally connect with readers?
2. What makes your book unique?
The next question that you need to highlight in your book promotions is – how is your book different from every other book out there in your topic area? There are tons of books in your specialty, so get creative and start sharing your author superpowers.
For example, for our first book was a dating book called “Smart Man Hunting: A Fast-Track Guide to Finding Mr. Right”. Many people said, “why do we need another dating book?” To make our book stand out, I created 26 A-Z man codes for the different personality types. I started making up the codes in Los Angeles, and people really like them.
For example, our first man code was the WD (Wounded Divorce), which was half of the single men in LA. The second code was BA (Bachelor Available), which is a guy who doesn’t run when you say the word relationship.
As a result, we expanded the man codes into a full alphabet, told real life stories about each one, provide movie examples, and turned it into a compatibility guide. The media LOVED these man codes, and it resulted in over 500 media hits over five years.
So think about what acronym, formula, or process is unique ONLY to you as an author that is part of your book? This topic is what will get a reporter or reader’s attention.
3. How is your book helping other people?
The third question that you must answer when promoting your author superpowers is how is your book helping others. People want to know What’s In It For Me (WIIFM) before they buy your book, especially if it’s a non-fiction and self-help book.
For the Goody Business Book Awards, we recognize authors making a difference “with words”. The goal is to shine a light on authors who are making a positive impact on the world.
So does your book help someone be a better entrepreneur, save money, build wealth, be a better leader, live longer? Whatever it does, you need to broadcast the benefits of reading your book to the world.
Promote Author Superpowers to Reach Your Niche Audience
The other reason why highlighting your author superpowers is so important is because it will help you reach your niche audience much faster. For example, if you are a management consultant, you want to highlight how your book helps leaders build better teams, or whatever your area of expertise is.
For theGoody Business Book Awards, you can Nominate Your book in 1-50 categories in 8 genres (Business, Entrepreneur, Health, Leadership, Marketing, Money and Wealth, Self-Help, and Technology) so that you can be recognized in your niche area of expertise.
